1 April 2016
Hello!
It's not an April Fool, it's an April hell-yeah! We're delighted to announce that Anthony Trevelyan's The Weightless World has been longlisted for the prestigious Desmond Elliott Prize for first novels.
This is a big deal for us. And an especial joy because up until this point we were worrying that this book - which we fell for so quickly and so hard on first reading - wasn't getting the attention it deserved. Everyone who read and reviewed it had said very good things, and clearly enjoyed it... And yet we weren't quite breaking through. Well, thanks to this nomination, we are now. We feel like justice has been done for a fine novel and and a wonderful man. It's a great waymark and hopefully just the start of a great career. Our writer - as our writers always do - has made us very proud.
Anyway, I hope you can forgive this extra newsletter. And also the hot flash of capitalism that's about to follow. We're now keener than ever that as many people as possible get to experience this fine and gloriously indefinable novel. Is it SF? Is it comic? Is it tragic? Is it satire or is it deadly serious? I don't know - but I know I like it and hope you will too. We're selling it for a limited period for £7.70 instead of the usual £11. And with free second class P&P for UK readers. Go to it!
Hey and since we're having a Desmond Elliott celebration, let's not forget that the mighty Jonathan Gibbs also made their longlist with the equally splendid Randall. We still have copies of this fine, fine novel to sell. And in our excess of joy, we're extending the offer. £7.70, free P&P, lots of glorious art.
And listen! We're still basking in the glory of Playthings. That's going for the same bargain price too.
Just looking at those books makes me happy. And talking of books that make me happy, I'd better extend the offer to Francis Plug too:
And, yes, let's bring in the beautiful, melancholy, and frequently hilarious Wrote For Luck:
All of these books have been nominated for big prizes over the past twelve months. We're very fortunate in our authors. They've done well.
And hey! Let's not forget our early successes by the beautiful and brilliant Andrew Lovett and Simon Gough too. We're still selling ebooks of Everlasting Lane and paperbacks of The White Goddess: An Encounter. That one weighs so much we can't extend the postal offer - but I've dropped the price on. And, of course, there's the glorious Eimear McBride. It's almost as if we're having a spring sale.
I'll stop gushing now. Thanks for reading!
Sam
PS I made it up with Jeff Bezos. We talked it over, we kissed and made up. He promised to stop trying to destroy all that is good in the world. I promised to stop making out that he was an evil cackling suppervilliain. He asked if we should peel off our clothes and make sweet, sweet love and I said that was probably a little bit much just now and we laughed and shook hands and bought ice creams from our favourite shop, and on the way out, Jeff put a £50 note in the charity box and tickled a little puppy under the chin and this bit is the April Fools. Jeff is actually still home alone, eating cold pizza, angrily staring into the empty, sterile future, wondering why he is so achingly lonely, wondering who to hurt next...

As usual, I'm also going to use the end of the newsletter for a few more adverts, where you can safely ignore them, or kindly indulge me, depending on your fancy:
Firstly, please join The Singles Club so we can pay writers to write. Here's the blurb:
We have a fantastic subscription system set up for our Singles Club so that you now only have to make one payment to get hold of 12 stories. But how to go through the ins and outs of paypal payment systems without boring the dirtbox off you, I don't know. Probably the best thing to do is to head over to the relevant page on our site, where I've tried to give a brief, but to the point explanation, and to take it from there. The important things to know are that:
(1) Subscribing saves you the trouble of going to the site every month to get your fix of superb ebook literature – we'll just email you the files every month.
(2) Subscribing (so long as enough people do it) will enable us to start giving our authors money up front on for each story. Yes! We are going to pay people to write short stories. It's like the golden days of the 1920s. Only they'll be in electronic book format instead of Strand magazine… Anyway! You get the idea. This is a mighty fine way to keep authors doing what they do best – entertaining you.
(3) It costs £12 a year, or £1 a month, or less than a meal in Pizza Express. (Unless you have a voucher.)
Secondly, please be our friend! Become a Galley Buddy. It's a good deal for us, and a great deal for you.
Thirdly, to donate to Galley Beggar Press and earn yet more of our gratitude, click here.
Fourthly, go on, buy a postcard set. They're lovely:
