Times Literary Supplement

Simon's just had a rave review in the Times Literary Supplement, from Maureen Freely. A few highlights:

gorgeous, preposterous and captivating

handsome brick of a book

He is Thomas Mann-like in his ability to pull you in by slowing down, so that you do not just imagine yourself there, on the veranda, savouring every moment of conversation as the moon rises over the cliffs and terraces of Deya. There is acute social observation, and with it, social comedy, but never so much as to undo the enchantment.

luxuriant descriptions of weather fair and foul

… evoking his lost youth and lost family in loving detail, forgiving everyone. Even the treacherous Margot, but refusing the platitudes that such accounts so often like to confirm. This is not a Bildungsroman, nor is it an act of revenger. It is a tribute to a poet possessed by divine madness, and despite its sharp eye for the comic and the ridiculous, it celebrates that madness in all its beauty.

It's a fine, thoughtful review, as well as favourable. Please do run out and buy a copy. (Of the Times Literary Supplement. Although if you want a book, we'll be only too happy to supply one.)

Oh yes! Just so we catch people googling "Master Beggar Press", here we are. As you may have spotted, we're actually Galley Beggar Press. A bit of a subbing error. Still, I shan't complain. It's lovely to be in there. And wonderful to have another thoughtful and favourable review.
