As I write this post, our first book, The White Goddess: An Encounter by Simon Gough is at the typesetters. Hopefully, by the end of this week, it will be on its way to the printers. Hopefully about ten days after that, it will actually exist, in physical form and then there will be no denying that Galley Beggar Press is actually happening. We will be a publishing company rather than just an idea.
And as I wrote that last sentence, I mentally crossed out a long list of adjectives to qualify "idea". These included "crazy", "uneconomical", "quixotic", "daft", "good", "excellent" and "strange". And I suppose all would have done and all would have been slightly not-quite-right. Because, at this stage we really don't know what kind of thing the press will turn out to be. We do know we've got a good first book and plenty more in the pipeline. We do know that we want these books to look good and feel good in physical form - and to be competitively priced and professionally produced in ebook form. We do know that we've spent a lot of time and plenty of money we don't have to realise this vision. But it remains a vision… For now… Soon, I'll have something more concrete to say.
For now though, you're just going to have to judge our first book by its cover, up above. Hope you like it!
(Don't judge us on the typos though! This is an olden version… We've fixed the missing apostrophes. Promise!)
