20 December 2013
I thought I'd end the year by pasting the text of our final 2013 newsletter. We'll be back in 2014 with more books, more Singles, an all new subscription service for said ebooks and things as yet unknown…
We're very proud to have published books as good as Everlasting Lane, A Girl is a Half-formed Thing and The White Goddess: An Encounter, not to mention all the superb bits of writing we've had in our Singles Club. We're looking forward to bringing more of the same, and also plenty of new stuff in 2014. We're also very grateful to everyone who has supported us over the past 12 months. If I started listing names it would go on forever, but I do want to give one special mention to David Collard at the TLS who was Eimear's first champion - and has remained her most vocal. I also want to thank everyone who reads this letter and interacts with our website. Without you, we'd be nothing. In a very literal, bankrupt kind of way… By coming direct to us, you've made a huge difference to our fortunes and, more importantly, you've helped bring some wonderful literature into the world. So I hope you feel proud too.
On the subject of wonderful literature, we're finishing the year on a high. This week's single club is pretty special. It's called Gunk and it's by Gerry Feehily, and here's the blurb:
The final Galley Beggar Single of 2013 and a very special one. Gerry Feehily takes us into the glamorous exciting world of fashion and models - and demonstrates conclusively that they are neither glamorous or exciting. But they are deliciously disturbing. And funny. And nasty. And as for the gunk…
This one goes deep.
It costs just £1 in our store as usual, and I'm very pleased to introduce you to such a talented writer. Also as usual.
If you prefer to do your shopping on the Death Star, you can also get it there. I'm sure Jeff Bezos will kill some sweet big-eyed puppies in all our honour, and cackle, and remove another human limb from the freezer and eat it with the ice still packed around it, because that's the temperature of his blood.
Right! That's about it. The end of the year, already. Time is cruel. Next year it will be 20 years since the Aphex Twin released Selected Ambient Works Volume II. What's up with that? When I listen to it, I still think it's the sound of the future. Red hell. I grow old, I grow old, I shall wear my trousers rolled. Gotta be an improvement on the way I wear them now…
Anyway. Thanks everyone. Hope to see you again in the New Year.
Sam
